Know the Danger Signals

Ceiling Spots
Possible cause: Inadequate or faulty shingle underlayment allowing leakage or inadequate ventilation.

Damaged Flashing
Possible cause: Improper installation, drying or cracking. Can usually be repaired without replacing the roof.

Missing Shingles
Possible cause: Shingles have reached the end of their useful life, exposure to high winds or improper fastening.

Buckling and Curling
Possible cause: Improperly installed felt (buckling), undersaturation of felt in organic based shingles (curling), or shingles have reached the end of their useful life.

Blistering
Possible cause: Excessive moisture in shingles or overuse of asphalt plastic cement.

Algae Growth
Possible Cause: Environmental pollutants; vegetation, fungus or algae; loss of granules due to age of shingles.

Rotting Shingles
Possible cause: Poor attic ventilation or moisture absorption by the shingles.

Excessive Energy Costs
Possible Cause: In warm weather, inadequate ventilation will trap hot air in the attic, causing air conditioning systems to work harder, or leaving your home's interior hotter and less comfortable. Attic Ventilation: In both hot and cold weather, insufficient attic ventilation may cause moisture in the attic to become trapped and condense on the rafters. This condensed moisture can drip down onto the insulation and reduce its effectiveness.
